GR Film Club

A partnership between GRPL, Wealthy Theatre, and Cinema Lab.

The Grand Rapids Public Library offers Kanopy, a streaming video collection that offers one of the most unique and compelling collections of film on the planet.

 

Kanopy is free to use with your Grand Rapids Public Library card.

The films on Kanopy include documentaries, indie and world films, must-see classics and blockbuster movies. The sophisticated discovery engine encourages our users to challenge themselves to watch films outside of their comfort area.

Peter Heller’s lyrical prose illuminates a modern buddy- adventure that is a physical as well as moral journey. It’s late August, and Jack and Wynn are beginning a wilderness canoe trip into the Canadian wilderness. The two young men, from different backgrounds, bonded while away at college through their mutual love of the outdoors and literature.

This program is inspired by the GR Reads 2020 selection, Once Upon a Time In Shaolin, a hip hop album by the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, was designed to get people’s attention. Secretly recorded over a number of years, the album was printed as a single copy housed in an expensive hand-carved case, and it sold anonymously for millions in 2015. The album was more than music. It was a unique art piece and statement on the modern music industry.
