Celebrate the comic books you love, and geek out on your favorite fandom. Join us for special guests, hands-on activities, snacks, free books, a comic workshop, and other fun events!

Meet Voice Actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey

Signing and Meet and Greet, 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Presentation and Q&A, 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Voice actress and Grand Rapids native Colleen O’Shaughnessey will make a special appearance at this year’s Comic Geek Out. In addition to signing autographs, Colleen will discuss her role as Tails in the Sonic 1 & 2 movies, what it is like to work as a voice actor, and her favorite voice work. Attendees will  get a chance to ask questions during the special Q&A.

Colleen has voiced numerous characters on anime and animated series, features, video games, commercials, and toys. She plays ChoCho on Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Dana on Mecard, Kajika on Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, and Sayla on Mobile Suit Gundam. She is the voice of Sora on Digimon & Digimon Tri, Ino & Konohamaru in Naruto, Kelsey/Glitter Sunny on the Glitter Force, Anna from K Return of Kings, Nel on Bleach, Tails on Sonic Boom, Wasp on the Avengers, and Jazz on Danny Phantom, to name a few.

Some features include the role of Miles Prower from Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, Perle in Sailor Moon Super S, Storks, Monsters University, Ponyo, Spirited Away and Cars. She is Alicia Melchiott from Valkyria Chronicles, Genis Sage from Tales of Symphonia, Kos Mos from Xenosaga, the female Asura from Guild Wars 2, multiple characters on Hitman, Southpark-Stick of Truth & The Fractured But Whole, Final Fantasy VII & X111, Fallout 4, and many more games.


Comic Strip Workshop

1:00 – 2:00 pm

Create a comic strip together with artist Nic Coppernoll. Learn about comic components like gutters, panels, and more. Materials will be provided at the event.

Vault of Midnight Drop-In

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Join the wonderful VOM staff at their table and geek out on the wide selection of comics, mangas and graphic novels available for purchase.

Tabletop Extravaganza

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Our friends at VOM have donated a selection of tabletop games to play while attending the event. Join your friends, family, or GRPL staff on a few non-guided tabletop games. 

Artists Alley

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Meet talented local artists and view their art. Artists will have work for sale and attendees can take home a free Sonic & Tails Comic Geek Out 2022 Poster designed by Cody Coppernoll (while supplies last). Get it signed by Colleen O’Shaughnessey while attending the event!

Comic Crafts

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Create comic crafts with GRPL library staff! Enjoy hands-on art-making designed for all ages. Materials are free and available while supplies last.

Comics 101 Exhibition

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Hackley Public Library together with GRPL present the “Comics 101” exhibit aimed at introducing people to the wonderful world of comics. Explore the history and generes contained inside this exciting medium!

Professional Cosplay Meet & Greet

1:00 – 5:00 pm

Meet your favorite characters from multiple franchises and pose for a photo with them at any of our selfie stations. Show off your photo or cosplay with #grpl, #comicgeekout2022 on social media for a chance to win a gift card. The winner will be contacted through social media after the event has concluded.

Cosplay Contest

3:00 – 4:30 pm

Showcase your amazing cosplay at Comic Geek Out 2022 to win prizes! Visiting professional cosplayers and GRPL staff, will judge their favorite cosplay outfits and winners will take home prizes.

Cosplay Guidelines
  • All costumes should provide enough coverage to be worn in public and appropriate for a family-friendly event.
  • No flash, fire, explosives, fireworks, smoke (including incense), fog (including dry ice), or incendiary devices, such as caps or smokers, will be allowed.
  • No chemicals, powders, thrown glitter or confetti will be allowed.
  • If prop weapons are part of your costume, they should comply with the following:
  • No sharp swords or knives or actual working weapons are allowed. Wood, rattan, bamboo, plastic, cardboard, foam, or rubber weapons are acceptable.
  • Fake firearms are not allowed. Even if they follow compliance with authorities and have a fluorescent orange plug in the muzzle.
  • Inspection of all weapons will be required prior to the event, regardless of material. Contestants are responsible for their own weapons, this includes carrying them throughout the event.
  • No profanity will be allowed during the event. This includes messages on signs or clothes.
