Accessing Your Account
To access your account, you will need your library card and password. When you get a library card, the password is set to the last four digits of your phone number. If you do not remember your password, contact Customer Service or call 616-988-5400 and ask to have your password reset.
Once you have logged in, you can change your password, view your record, place a hold, renew an item, give yourself a username or pay fines. You can also sign up to be notified by email and text message when your holds are ready or you have an item overdue.
Finding Library Materials
The Grand Rapids Public Library has its own catalog of materials, known as Evergreen. When you search for library materials, you will start with Evergreen to search all of the Grand Rapids Public Library’s holdings. If you find what you are looking for, you can take it from the shelf and check it out. If the material is out or at a different location, you can place a hold on it. You can have up to 15 items on hold at one time. Choose your favorite GRPL location for pick up.
If you do not find an item in Evergreen, simply click the “Search MeLCat” link to look for your item in the Michigan Electronic Library Catalog (MeLCat). MeLCat provides access to libraries across the state, including university libraries. If you find the book you need in MeLCat, it will be delivered to the GRPL location of your choice. MeLCat will notify you by email when your requested item is in. MeLCat services are only for books. Children 12 and under cannot use MeLCat to borrow materials.
Kent District Library
You can also use your Grand Rapids Public Library card to check out material from the Kent District Library. Click on the “Search KDL” link to look for an item in the Kent District Library catalog. If the item you are looking for is available, you may go to the owning library to pick up the item. You may place a hold on some Kent District Library materials. You will need to pick up and return the item at a KDL location. To choose a KDL pick up location, contact their Service Center at 616.784.2007.
Due Dates, Renewals, Fines
You can check out a total of 100 items on your card.
Loan period: 3 weeks (2 renewals)
Limit: 100 items checked out at once
Overdue Fines: $0.15 per day ($4.95 max), no fines on kid and teen books
Audiobooks and Music CDs
Loan period: 3 weeks (2 renewals)
Limit: 25 checked out at once
Overdue Fine: $0.15 per day ($4.95 max), no fines on kids and teen audiobooks or music
DVDs – Feature films, TV shows, non-fiction
Loan period: 1 week (2 renewals)
Limit: 15 checked out at once
Overdue Fine for feature films, TV shows, nonfiction: $0.15 per day ($4.95 max), no fines on kids and teen movies
Library material can be renewed by logging into your account online, calling 616-988-5418 or in person at any branch location. When renewing, please have your library card number ready.
GRPL does not charge overdue fines on kids and teen materials (books, movies, music).
Fines can be paid by cash, check or credit/debit card at any GRPL location. You can also pay online when logged into your account.
Treat your library card like a credit card and remember to report it lost or stolen immediately.
Returning Library Materials
Please return any items checked out from the Grand Rapids Public Library, including those borrowed through MeLCat, to one of the eight GRPL locations for immediate check-in. GRPL items returned to non-GRPL libraries will not be checked in until they arrive at a GRPL location. If materials are returned late or are damaged while checked out to you, fines will be added to your account.
Parking is free at all seven GRPL branches. At the Main Library, one hour of free parking is available during the week in the lot next to the library. Parking rates during the week cost $1.10 per half hour after the first free hour. On the weekend, parking at the Main Library is free all day with a validated ticket. Bring your parking ticket inside the Main Library to have it validated.
