March 17, 2020

Dear Patrons:

On Saturday, March 14, the Board of Library Commissioners held a special meeting to take proactive measures in response to COVID-19. The health and public safety of our community is the Board’s top priority. In this meeting, the Board took decisive action to do the following:

  • Close all eight GRPL locations for the foreseeable future to encourage social distancing to slow the spread of the virus.
  • Support the health and wellbeing of GRPL staff by providing full pay to all staff during the closure, including emergency leave pay for those impacted by COVID-19.
  • Increase the digital resources offered to GRPL patrons including eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines, research databases, and streaming tv shows, movies, and music. These exceptional collections are offered free of charge to all GRPL cardholders. Visit www.grpl.org/download to learn more.

The Board of Library Commissioners fully supports the work of the City of Grand Rapids, the Kent County Health Department, the Grand Rapids Public Schools, and all of our other community partners who are working to make sure that all of our community is safe and healthy.

GRPL staff is working behind the scenes to make sure that patrons are still receiving the services and help they need. Patrons can call 616-988-5400, email custserv@grpl.org, or post on social media any questions they may have. Staff members are also sharing updated information and vetted resources on the library’s website and social media channels.

The Board is grateful for the leadership of GRPL Director John McNaughton and the dedication of GRPL staff who have gone above and beyond during this challenging time. Our community should be proud to have such an outstanding library staff.

GRPL’s Executive Team and Board are actively monitoring the situation and are in daily contact with the City. We will provide patrons with information as it becomes available. Please stay healthy and safe.

Sincerely,

Kent Sparks
President
Board of Library Commissioners
