Costs, Fines, and
Charges [top]
1. Library Cards
- Residents of the city of Grand Rapids with adequate identification receive their initial library card free of charge.
- Non-residents of the city may purchase a library card entitling them to library resident privileges in the City’s libraries for six months or one year’s use for a fee of $60.00 or $115.00 respectively. (Non-residents of the City who reside in the service area of one of the member libraries of the Lakeland Library Cooperative may use their home library card at the Grand Rapids Public Library as if they were residents of Grand Rapids).
- Replacement cards cost $1.00.
2. Extended Reference Assistance
Patrons needing special assistance (e.g. faxing of information, copying service, research time) which the Library cannot afford to provide free to all patrons will pay the services needed according to the following schedule:
- Research fee - $30.00 per hour ($6.00 - one-fifth hour minimum) - research fee is based on one hour's compensation (including fringe benefits) provided employees in the Library Assistant II classification at "F" step, rounded to the nearest $5.00 increment.
- Copies - up to 5 pages at no cost, then the research fee plus $0.25 per page
- Fax - up to 5 pages at no cost, then the research fee plus $0.25 per page
- Database search products - actual costs are charged for products resulting from online access to off-site databases
3. Reference & Periodical Materials Circulation
Reference Materials are not a circulating collection but in rare cases, a patron’s need may warrant allowing a Reference item to be checked out. In such cases, staff must follow these procedures:
- Either the Collection Development Supervisor or Public Service Supervisor must first approve the loan of either Reference or Periodical materials. If neither is available, then either the Subject Area Specialist or the Reference and Adult Services Coordinator may approve the loan.
li>
- The staff member authorizing the loan must escort the patron to the Circulation Desk. The staff member should give the circulation staff verbal approval of the loan as well as dictate the conditions of it. For periodicals, the office assistant in charge of periodicals must escort the patron to the Circulation Desk and offer verbal approval.
- The item must be checked out on the requesting individual’s Lakeland Library Cooperative member card, not a Michicard.
- The standard loan period is same day or at most overnight, provided the following day is a business day. Items may not be checked out over a weekend or holiday.
- Patrons will submit a deposit of $50.00 per item, returnable upon return of the item.
- Fines will be $20.00 per day overdue, paid initially from the deposit left for the item(s).
- Materials may not be checked out from the Grand Rapids History & Special Collections Department without the approval of the Director or the Director's designee.
