Video Games = Learning?

So, to all those adults out there that worry that their son or daughter spends too much time playing video games, take heart. A new study shows some games can lead to skills employers are looking for and perhaps be implemented in school classrooms. Of course, there need to be guidelines and training on how to use the game effectively. But don't worry, parents, the games may not be numbing their minds after all. Play on!

Actually, I teach a seminar on this very issue - how teachers, parents, and media specialists can better understand misconceptions of television and video games that they aquired based solely from the cold hard research on the subject; and reminding adults that these statistics are coming from a perspective where there are hundreds of other issues going on (unchecked usage, single parent homes, latch -key syndrome, no one facilitating the need for reading and writing, etc...). In a balanced environment, and when used wisely and moderately, television and video games can lead to really great opportunities for interaction and learning. My session also discusses childrens' and teens' (and adults'!) fascination with t.v. and video games and how grown-ups can redirect the same passion for the digital experience to concepts of real-world creativity and problem-solving...

...no really, I'm serious. :-)
