Looking for a Good Book?
While reading a NPR page today I came across a page called Read Any Good Books? It is a page devoted to book recommendations from the listeners of NPR. The recommendation currently posted is for the book Giants in the Earth by Ole Edvart Rolvaag. This is one of my favorite books as well, telling the story of Norwegian immigrants settling South Dakota during the late 1800's. My Norwegian grandmother would have been proud, but I digress.
If you are looking for a good book to read there are several places to go. I would try one of the following:
- GRPL's Readers Links page is a good start
- The Morton Grove Library in Illinois has a great site called Web Sites for Book Lovers devoted to links for book lovers with links to award winners, discussion lists, etc.
- At GRPL we have a series of books called Genreflecting which help the reader find a book that fits their reading mood
This is just a start, but please share some other ideas of where to find that elusive next book!

I have to question any list that includes Peace Like a River. I know a lot of people liked it, but I could barely make it to the end.

I didn't like the first sentence. "FROM MY FIRST BREATH IN THIS WORLD, ALL I WANTED WAS A GOOD SET OF lungs and the air to fill them with- given circumstances, you might presume, for an American baby of the twentieth century."

One place I love to go to hang out and troll for books is www.overbooked.com
It has annotated lists of nonfiction, fiction and mystery books which received starred reviews in the standard review journals. Hotlists, theme lists, all stars (those titles that have recieved a 'star' rating from all reviewing sources) will introduce you to excellent books you didn't see go by.
