Learning a Trade

The trade profession focuses on job-specific training which generally fall into the following categories:

Apprenticeship Programs offer hands-on training under the guide of an experienced mentor. Jobs are usually in the skilled labor arena in industries such as electrical, plumbing, machinery, construction, or manufacturing.

Certification Programs offer short-term, specialized training (usually a few months up to one year) to enhance the student's existing technical knowledge and skills in a particular discipline. Examples of jobs that may require certification include computer service technician, desktop publishing specialist, health care billing specialist, and radiologic technologist.

Trade Schools (aka vocational schools or career colleges) offer training courses which generally focus on the disciplines of computer technology, industrial art, applied sciences and health care sciences. Job examples include barber/beautician, paralegal, court reporter, optician, medical/dental assistant, chef, mechanic, jeweler or drafter.
