eBook Formats for Popular Devices

OverDrive offers different versions of eBooks (Kindle, EPUB and PDF).

  • The Kindle format is used for eBooks checked out through Amazon.
  • EPUB and PDF eBook are similar but to have some differences.
  • The EPUB format is preferred when using smaller screens (such as mobile devices).


Kindle Amazon -- Kindle format only

Nook Barnes & Noble -- EPUB & PDF formats

iPad Apple -- Kindle & EPUB formats

iPhone Apple (NOT 1st generation) -- Kindle & EPUB formats

Nook

Patrons using a Nook will need three online accounts:

GRPL Evergreen account
Barnes & Noble account
Adobe Digital Editions account.
patrons will also need a USB cord


Checkout Instructions

  1. from GRPL homepage, click Downloadable Books link
  2. click OverDrive logo
  3. (after navigating page and finding an ebook) click on ebook title
  4. under the heading 'Format Information,' click Add to OverDrive Book Bag for appropriate device
  5. within the 'My OverDrive Book Bag' page, click Proceed to Checkout
  6. enter in Evergreen username and password
  7. choose lending period (7, 14 or 21 days) from drop menu
  8. click Confirm Checkout
  9. click Download
  10. in the pop-up box that appears, select the Open with options along with Adobe Digital Editions in the drop menu and click OK
  11. Adobe Digital Editions program will open automatically. If not currently logged in, the patron will need to enter their username and password. If they are already logged in, the eBook will automatically appear.
  12. To transfer the computer displayed eBook onto a Nook, click the icon of three book spines (located in the upper left corner, underneath the Adobe Digital Editions heading). If you hover the cursor on this icon, you will see it's labeled Go To Library View.
  13. plug Nook into computer with USB cord and Authorize Device (if need be)
  14. Adobe Digital Editions will detect the plugged in Nook. An NOOK icon will appear at the bottom of the left-hand side column, under the heading 'Bookshelves.'
  15. Next, click the book cover of the recently downloaded book but keep the mouse button held down. Now drag the cursor to NOOK and release the mouse button. (You will know when the cursor is above the NOOK icon when a green circle with a white cross inside or it appear next to the cursor).
  16. The eBook will begin transferring from the computer to the Nook. This will take a few moments.
  17. After the transfer is complete, patron will need to eject their Nook by clicking on the Nook icon, located on the computer's toolbar (by the time/date in the bottom right of the screen. (Patron can also simply unplug their Nook, but file transfer problems are possible).
  18. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED -- the patron can begin reading the eBook from their Nook.


Adobe Digital Editions

Installing Adobe Digital Editions onto Computer

  1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/.
  2. Scroll down until you see a large brown icon labeled Install and click.
  3. A warning will appear (This application can read and write files...), click Install again.
  4. In the box that appears, click Yes.
  5. In the new box that appears (Adobe Digital Editions Setup), check the components you want to install (quick launch icons, etc.). Click Next>.
  6. The destination folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Digital Editions) appears, click Install.
  7. After download is completed, click Close.
  8. The next box to appear is the licensing agreement, click I Agree.
  9. Adobe Digital Editions is now installed and will open itself.


Authorize Computer OR Don't Authorize Computer

  • Authorize (recommended) -- "This option enables you to read protected items that you download with Digital Editions on up to six computers and mobile devices. It also enables you to restore your eBooks from backup should you ever need to re-install your operating system."
  • Don't Authorize -- "With this option, items that you already have or download later will be tied to this particular computer, will not be readable on other computers or devices, and can't be restored from backup if the operating system is re-installed."


How to Authorize Computer

  1. Enter Adobe ID (email address) and Password, then click Activate.
  2. In the next page, click Finished.
  • If you don't have an Adobe ID, click on the brown-lettered get an Adobe ID online link, located above the phrase Authorize Computer (Recommended).


Creating an Adobe Account

  1. Click yellow Create an Adobe Account icon.
  2. Enter all required fields and tell patron about deselecting Communication preferences boxes to avoid spam.
  3. Click on grey continue icon at the bottom of the page.
  4. Tell patron about deselecting Communication preferences boxes to avoid spam!
  5. Click continue in the Thank You page.
  6. Patron will now be on their My Adobe page, where they can manage their account and preferences.
