Poetry Slam - Rehearse and Practice
Show off your poetry skills, speak to the verities of life, and get the recognition you deserve. Slam Master Greg Bliss will be the host for this night of poetry. This is a rehearsal and practice to prepare for the Second Annual Poetry Slam on April 25th.* All participants must submit poems prior to the event. Call 616-988-5415 for details or email your poem to poetry@grpl.org. This is a free program for ages 16 and up.

Mother Goose is on the Loose
This spring break Mother Goose is on the Loose at the Grand Rapids Public Library. Poetry and live animals combine to make this an event not to miss. For preschool age children. Free and open to the public.

Haiku U – A Haiku Workshop with Poet Linda Nemec Foster Check out the Haiku winners!
Families are invited to join poet Linda Nemec Foster to learn about writing your own Haiku poem. Haiku, a traditional Japanese poetry style, is a three-line poem with five syllables on the first line, seven on the second and five on the third. Haikus that participants write can be submitted in a contest. The winning haiku will be chosen to be in fortune cookies handed out at the Library during National Library Week.

Times and locations vary, see below Are you a fast talker? Do you like funny things? Put the two together and enter our Poetry race for kids. You have to try to say 3 tongue twisters WITHOUT any mistakes, as fast as you can in a minute. Think you can do it? Why not try? It's going to be fun. There's a prize for the smoothest, fastest talker. You'll find the 3 official tongue twisters at each of the library race locations.

Playing with Poems – An Introduction to Writing Poetry with Heather Sellers Do you want to write poetry? Or do you wish you could write poetry more easily? In this workshop, poet and Hope College professor Heather Sellers will share how to start poems more easily, using secret tricks poets have relied upon for centuries! Try writing three different types of poems: a magic poem, a two person poem and an opposite poem. If you have always wanted to write poetry, but aren’t sure how to start, or if you are in a writing rut, this class is for you. Bring your own pen and paper. Appropriate for all ages.
