Digital Art
In the digital age we're finding numerous ways to use technology. One of these ways is through art. Many artists are turning to digital painting and drawing to complete their work. Digital art will never fully replace the traditional mediums, but it does add a great new medium for artist to work in.
Software
Photoshop- Probably the most commonly know program. Photoshop is good for editing photos, but it can also be used to draw in digitally.
Corel Painter- A popular digital painting program.
Flash- Used by many animators, but you can draw in it too!
ArtRage-Artrage software runs from $20-$80, depending upon which version you choose.
Autodesk Sketchbook Pro- There is currently a free trial available for this program.
GIMP- Basic, but free.
OpenCanvas-This drawing program has older additions that are free for download, but the latest version is only available for purchase.
Online Drawing Programs-Check out this list of free online drawing programs. Many of these programs allow for chat and/or user commenting.
Drawing Tablets
One of the main contentions people have had about digital drawing is trying to use a mouse. Well there is a solution; the drawing tablet. A drawing tablet has a pen that allows you to draw directly onto your computer screen. Click here for a video review of a tablet.
Tablets do require a little bit of an investment and they range in price and quality. Wacom is the main source for tablets: Cintiq, Bamboo, Intuos.
Bamboo- Bamboo tablets are the most affordable of the three, starting at $69.99 These are great for anyone just starting to work digitally; there are more sophisticated tablets, but these are perfect for beginners.
Intuos- Intuos is a better quality tablet Bamboo, however it does jump up significantly price wise (the cheapest is $299). Created with professional artists in mind the Intuos allows for consistent pen strokes and the also have a wireless tablet option.
Cintiq- Cintiq tablets are high quality tablets, but unfortunately very pricey. Cintiqs have an LCD screen, scratch resistant glass, and replicate traditional brushstrokes better than other tablets. Cintiqs start at $999, so this one is for serious artists.
