Why Join the Summer Reading Program?

Summer Learning loss is explained by Horizons National.   Whether you agree with the explanation, “The Dominican Study: Do Public Library Programs Close the Achievement Gap?” proves the following:  “Students who participated in a public library summer reading program maintained and increased reading skills.”  “Recreational reading outside of school made a difference in improving reading scores.”

Reading for fun and regular trips to the library to get a variety of print materials improves “children’s reading performance… and produces improved attitudes toward reading and learning among children.”

The Summer Reading Program isn’t a tutoring program.  Library staff at all 8 branches are here to celebrate and support the fun of reading with a starter bag and reading record for babies, kids, and teens.  There are prizes given throughout the program.  Sign up starting Monday, June 11 at your favorite GRPL location!

If you need transportation to your closest library, we have free bus passes in our Ride to Read program.

Keep reading the blog this summer for more information about the kids and teen programs we are offering.
