I remember back to my first visit to Frederik Meijer Gardens thinking “well, this has potential, but it’s pretty small potatoes compared to Kew Gardens in London, or the Chicago Botanic Garden.” Clearly my crystal ball (or more likely Magic 8 ball) was broken that day, since “the Gardens”, as my four-year-old daughter calls them, have been named in the list of 100 most visited art museums in the world. Yep, that’s in the WHOLE WORLD.
And of course I left off half of their name. It’s actually Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Since my daughter came along, I haven’t been able to linger too often in the sculpture park, or gaze for very long at the special exhibitions, because we spend pretty much all of our time in the perfectly designed Children’s Garden.
We did catch the Chihuly exhibition last year, which was amazing, and the Gardens continue to bring in top artists and showcase their work. I love being able to visit an art museum with my family where there’s something for everyone: gardens and sculptures and butterflies and even huge sand and water play areas for the kids.
And apparently I’m not the only one who thinks this way! Frederik Meijer Garden is the only museum listed on the Top 100 list in the Midwest besides the Art Institute of Chicago, and the only museum listed in Michigan. Wow!
