For millions of Americans, Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the most important historical figures in this country’s past, if not the world’s. This day honoring his legacy has been a Federal holiday since 1986. This year’s Presidential Proclamation reminds us that the nation MLK envisioned is not here yet.
The Grand Rapids Public Library has literally hundreds of resources about and by Dr. King. His actions have inspired millions, and he offered many words to live by. Here is one example:
Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.
If you’ve got the day off, you might want to participate in the MLK Day of Service.
