The Great Outdoors

Dewey Lake

Every summer I look forward to it: setting up a temporary home with a tiny tent, hiking through the dark woods, gazing at the stars, getting spooked by rustling in the middle of the night, relaxing on the beach at Lake Michigan…ahh yes, CAMPING! All right, I must admit, I’m not the most experienced camper in the world. Drop me off in the middle of the woods among the bears and wolves on Isle Royale, and I might have a panic attack. If I’m with a group of friends, though, I find camping to be one of the most the most memorable experiences in life.

One of my favorite camping experiences took place several years ago on South Manitou Island with my best friend. We hopped on the boat for an hour and a half ride and met a concerned little girl along the way that inquired, “Aren’t you afraid of the chipmunks?” when we told her we were staying overnight. We laughed at her and thought, “Oh, silly girl!” It turns out she was right. Park rangers even call them “Northern Miniature Tigers”. Who knew such tiny creatures could be so aggressive?

Summer is flying by, and before you know it, snow will be falling at our feet yet again. Check out all of the campgrounds that our wonderful state has to offer. If you’re not interested in backaches or mosquito bites, we also offer Park and Read day passes, which saves you money on parking.

I love camping too! It's such a lovely way to reconnect with nature and with the people sharing the experience with you. Lots of sitting and talking is good for the soul.

Lisa- The chipmunks were just really aggressive when human food was around, so we had to keep chasing them away. I suppose a lot of campgrounds are like that though.

Amanda- Yes! Have any plans to go anywhere this summer? I've always wanted to check out one of the campgrounds in Manistee.
