Coe Booth, author of Tyrell and Kendra, visited Grand Rapids on June 11. Her first visit on Thursday was to St. John’s Home where she met with over 30 teens who asked many questions about her books and had lots of opinions on certain details of the plots. Some of those teens attended her writing workshop in the afternoon at the Main Library downtown.
The VanderVeen center hosted 33 teens for the workshop which lasted for 2 hours. Coe managed to keep their attention and gave an opportunity for everyone to share some of his or her writing. She also gave basic tips and modeled the writing process. Her best tip was, when writing a first draft, NEVER go back and rewrite otherwise you will get stuck in a cycle of rewriting and will never finish! Just bust on through and finish the story. THEN you can go back and revise all you want.
After dinner out with the 2 teen essay contest winners, Coe spoke to the public about her writing and the publishing process and signed copies of her books.
There are plenty of other opportunities to express yourself and win big! The library is running two other contests this summer! Teens can participate in the Harry Potter FanFiction contest and the Songwriting contest. The Harry Potter FanFiction contest will include a prize for the best fanfic! Here’s the info on the contest: Wish you could rewrite the ending of Harry Potter and his story? Want to continue the stories of Harry and his friends? Here is your chance!
