World Dance Party Summer Reading Kickoff

Show up and get down to kick off summer reading at the Grand Rapids Public Library! Celebrate culture and community with music, food, and fun! Meet new friends and learn multicultural dances taught by volunteer instructors. Styles include Zumba, Salsa, Bollywood, Hip Hop, and Flamenco.

Have you ever wanted to learn to play a sport but didn’t know where to start? Basketball? Pickleball? Join us for fun and active sports clinics at some of our beautiful city parks. Kids of all ages are welcome to come and learn how to play a favorite or new sport. There will be crafts and lots of great physical activity. Hot dogs and snacks will be provided.

Elena & Sonia: Songs from Latin America and East Asia

Elena & Sonia are an exciting new duo that take audiences on a musical journey around the world, guided by folk and children’s songs from East Asia, Latin America, and beyond. They perform songs in English, Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, Tibetan, and Taiwanese, exploring the stories and traditions behind these songs and discovering the common themes that tie us all together. Audiences will sing along in every language, dance, clap, and have fun, and take a musical exploration from Japanese sea shanties to Mexican party songs to American work songs, and everything in between.

Namaste! Sing Song Yoga™  is a yoga program designed for children that uses original children’s songs to assist in learning yoga poses. Parents are encouraged to stay with their younger children until a certain level of comfort and willingness is well established. Yoga mats are provided or bring your own mat or beach towel.

Drumming in the library?! YES! Come join the “Drummunity” circle, with percussionist Lori Fithian. She brings the drums, you get to play them! Grab your whole family and get in the Drummunity groove!  She’ll show us how to play, sing and dance to the community beat with rhythm games, songs and fun for all ages. No experience necessary.

Acting Up Theatre

Charlie the Couch Potato does nothing all day except watch TV, play video games and eat junk food. The problem is, he was planted to become a fat-free potato for fat-free french fries, but he has a lot of fat and has no motivation to lose it. Now, the chef has hired a fitness specialist to get Charlie into shape. The fitness specialist—Move More Murray—encourages Charlie to put down the snacks and to “move, play and read!”
