Summer Reading Kick-Off Event
Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Celebrate Community Heroes!

Come talk to the real-life heroes that live and work in Grand Rapids. Explore the vehicles and tools they use in their work on display in the streets in front of the Main Library and the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. Grand Rapids Fire and Police Departments, the American Red Cross, the Humane Society, the United States Army, Buster the Bus and other school buses from Dean Transportation, and local arts organizations will be present. Hands on activities for the whole family.

Greg Lester’s Puppet Adventures: Jack and the Beanstalk

This handcrafted puppet play tells the story of Jack. Jack becomes a hero when he climbs up a magical beanstalk and begins a spectacular journey up through the clouds. Jack discovers a magnificent castle with golden geese, hoards of riches, a magical singing harp, and a cruel and goofy giant. Jack learns there is more to himself than he had ever guessed. BOOM! BOOM! Save the harp quick Jack, the giant is coming!

Everyday Hero: Multicultural Stories & Music

Learn that anyone can be a hero in these interactive stories told by The Storytellers—Bob and Audrey Allison. Audrey uses multiple voices and uncanny vocal effects. Bob accompanies the stories playing world music on a variety of instruments. There will be opportunities for you to play some of these instruments, including the cuica, berimbau, and udu.
