Pullman pulled me in.

The Golden Compass

Winter is a great time to snuggle up to a book or two or twelve! Try out some of Philip Pullman’s books. His most famous series moved to Hollywood. The first book of His Dark Materials, The Golden Compass hit the big screen this week (December 7th) in 2007. If you saw the movie, try the book because as “they” say “the book is much better than the movie.” Also try the rest of the series – The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

Not into theological debates? — Pullman also writes wonderful books for children and teens! The Sally Lockhart Mysteries had me hooked cover-to-cover, book-to book. Individual titles are: The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and The Tin Princess. The first three books are about a young girl who’s father dies. His death sends Sally into numerous adventures with her friends Jim, Fredrick, and Rosa. Part financial consultant, part detective of her personal mysteries, Sally is a forward thinking woman of the Victorian Era.

Other Novels:

The Broken Bridge, The Butterfly Tattoo

Teens/Childrens Books:

The New Cut Gang (series), The Scarecrow and His Servant, Spring-Heeled Jack, The Firework-maker’s Daughter, I Was a Rat, Puss in Boots, Count Karlstein, Mossycoat, Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp, Clockwork

His Dark Materials on audio (with the full cast) is excellent! It is one of my favorite audio book(s).

I don't know how they were going to pull off an adequate 2nd and 3rd movie. Once you get to the Amber Spyglass it kind of gets a little wonky IMO.

The books on CD are good though.

I've heard that they don't plan on making the rest of the books into films due to their controversial nature, which is a real shame especially since they left off on such a cliffhanger.
