Possum Trot!

I looked up the other afternoon to see a large opossum marching down our driveway. The weather had warmed up and he  had a determined step, as he  headed out towards the big road.  Then a couple of days later, a few miles from home, I passed another opossum trundling along the edge of the roadside.  Were they both headed to the same place? A convention?

I’ve always delighted in possums, although they are not as  popular as one might suppose. Perhaps the tail, or the 50 teeth– they are an unusual creature  (and the only marsupial in N. America).  The National Opossum Society shines a light on possum mysteries,  as does  “Opossum Faq’s” , from John Craton’s  ‘Possum Pages.  Opossums  are at their northern most extension in MI, sometimes getting their little bare tails frostbit.   Mammals of Michigan Field Guide,  (an amazing book!) and Michigan Mammals provided some clues, and Youth Services has  several opossum books.  My favorite being,

There’s an Opossum in My Backyard. As to where they were off to mid-February? All info points to a date he found on PossumPartners…

I've never pleased when I come across an opossum, but I do think it's hilarious how they move. They always seem to be on a mission.

My dog scared one up in the corner of my backyard the other night. It was dark and I went to find out what he was barking at only to see this white face peeking up over the top of my fence. I must say it did give me a start!
