One Crazy Contest: What Does Your Name Mean to You?

Read One Crazy Summer. Delphine thinks about names, including her own name. When you think about what your name means to you, do you want to write a poem? Write a story? Make a picture? Film or record a video book trailer? If you need help in making a book trailer, come to one of our book trailer workshops.

Submit your creative expressions between January 1 and February 15, 2015. Contest entry forms will be available online and at your local branch library.

Gift cards and books will be awarded. Get a chance to perform or show your work to award-winning author, Rita Williams-Garcia.

One Crazy Scavenger Hunt

This February get your 1968 clue card at the library. Every time you find a clue in the library, bring your card and get a punch. Fill up a card and get a chance to win cool prizes.

One Crazy Book Signing with Rita Williams-Garcia & Student’s Creative Presentations

Meet the author of One Crazy Summer.

Get ready for an evening of creative explosion. Youth from the Cook Library Center will present a bilingual presentation on One Crazy Summer. The winners of the Name Contest will be presenting their work. Book trailers that were filmed at library workshops will be shown during the evening. Refreshments and cake will be served.

Become a Reading Activist

Promote reading in your community. Put your own slogan on a sign. Craft materials, including large craft sticks, will be available.

What Does Your Name Mean? Paint Party

2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Design and paint a creative work showing the world what your name means to you! Your creative work can be displayed in our instant gallery on the second floor of the library after it’s completed and shared with the world via social media. We will have an airbrush machine set-up, stencils, with washable paint for you to create and design your own name expression.

One Crazy Poetry Reading

3:00 pm

Participate in this poetry reading by bringing a poem you have written or a favorite one written by a poet of your choice. We will also have poems by Nikki Giovanni, Langston Hughes and other poets that are mentioned in One Crazy Summer or influenced the author when she was writing the book.
