Kids 9 to 10 years: Playing

Play is one of the best ways for children to learn language and literacy skills. For this age group, it is important for them to experience enjoyment through reading that can be applied outside of the classroom or formal instruction.

  • Play games.
    • Crossword puzzles and word searches are great games to help improve literacy skills.
    • Play board games based on books, like Jumanji by Chris Van Alsburg, The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, or the Sweet Valley High series.
    • Play Scrabble! Scrabble is a great way to practice spelling and increase vocabulary. Plus it also teaches them how to use a dictionary whenever a word is challenged!
