LIBRARIAN II-Reference and Adult Services Department

RATE OF PAY: $47,953 to $60,316

The Grand Rapids Public Library is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional Librarian to provide public service, supervision, and collection development in our Reference and Adult Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides advice and guidance to Library Patrons by using Library materials, services, and equipment.
  • Supervises staff.
  • Participates in the development of training for Library. patrons and staff in the assigned area of specialty.
  • Monitors activities in the Library.
  • Performs varied reference work and research for patrons.
  • Contributes to selection, development and evaluation of materials in specialized or assigned area.
  • Compiles Reader's Advisory Tools as directed.
  • Manages and performs cataloging and classification of materials in all formats, including original cataloging.
  • Organizes, arranges, and indexes historical collections and provides assistance in restoration of books in open and closed collections.
  • Assists with staff training and evaluations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of modern library principles, professional methods, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Library resources, services, policies and procedures; ability to effectively access and utilize Internet resources; proficiency in using computers for reference service.
  • Considerable knowledge of theory and practice in a library specialty as demonstrated by experience.
  • A thorough understanding of management and supervisory practices.
  • A demonstrated ability to oversee and develop programs for the Library.
  • Ability to assess patron needs and utilize library resources in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to research historical or technical questions in field of specialty.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with the public as well as co-workers at all levels throughout the library.
  • Continue to educate self on library developments by attending conferences and professional meetings as well as by reading professional literature.
