I’m sleeping as I write this

I have a strange thing happen to me when I sleep.  I write.  I’ll wake up in the morning and see paper by bed, with some crazy random sentence written on it. I don’t know how this happens.  Sometimes I can remember sort of waking up in the middle of the night, in a hazy state, thinking ” i need to write this down” even if its the weirdest sentence ever. Its like a voice that won’t leave me alone until i write it down.

One of my late night scribblings, written early morning 4/2/11

I tried doing some research on the subject, but all i could was find a blog of a girl who would scan in what she’s written while she was sleeping. This must be some kind of rare thing?

The more I talked to people about it, the weirder the stories became. One of my friends told me about someone who can’t keep juice in his house because he’ll guzzle it down at night, only to be confused as to why his juice was gone in the morning. (It ONLY happens with juice!)

I tried to find anything on the subject, and so far i found a book on sleep problems, weird things that happen to people when they sleep, and a book talking about how having a sleep journal can help you relax (not the same as writing IN your sleep!!)

I guess i’ll just keep on writing, and maybe make a zine out of my findings!!

I often get good ideas in my sleep or right before I fall asleep and I do sometimes turn on a light and jot them down. However, I don't think I am quite as unconscious as you are! I almost think it is a gift that you can capture these strange bits from a place in your mind you couldn't usually access. Your sample is kind of poetic.

I love this note from the Sleep Writing blog: "At what age do you tell a highway it’s adopted?"

Did you ever hear Chad's Sleeptalker tape? http://newwordsproject.com/blog/?p=663
