Ok, I have to admit something here. I never heard of World Book Day before but I just learned that April 23 is designated by UNESCO as World Book and Copyright Day. So, why April 23 you say? Well, it turns out that two of the greatest writers to have ever lived both died on this day in 1616 CE. Those two writers: William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. Yep, they both died on the same day. I’d say that gives April 23 some literary cred.
UNESCO offers a list of suggestions for how you can join the celebration. My favorite on the list is #4: Leave a book on a park bench or a metro seat with a note saying “Happy Book and Copyright Day!” I may give this one a try, but not with a library book of course. That would be bad. Maybe a better idea is #1: Download books published over 100 years ago on Kindle, they’re free! So, why not try Will or Miguel on the Kindle/Nook. But if you’re not into the old stuff you can always choose something a bit more contemporary from our free ebook collection.
