It was a fun night on Tuesday when Bonnie Jo Campbell visited the Grand Rapids Public Library. Her book of short stories, American Salvage, was selected as one of our GR Reads. The book was a 2009 National Book Award finalist, as well as a Michigan Notable Book. Campbell opened the evening with a poem about shopping at Meijers, which the audience loved. She read from American Salvage, read a few additional poems and one piece of non-fiction. She invited the audience to ask questions, and they responded with great questions and observations about her writing. It appeared that most of the audience had already read her work and were avid fans. We all have a new Campbell book to look forward to next year, a kind of pre-quel to Q Road.
