Father’s Day coming up! Sunday June 17th

Father’s Day at our house is celebrated by my husband, roaring off with his cousin to an all-day car show event.    Many countries celebrate Father’s Day in unique ways.    At our house, the dogs always present an elaborate card and gift.   The library has a large selection of books for, by, and about dads, and what dads like to do best. It’s interesting that Father’s Day has a bit of a neglected history– even Groundhog Day was established long before dad got official recognition…

There’s a wide variety of fathers, and father figures, that help guide us in life.  Their effects are wide ranging, sometimes paradoxical, either because of their presence, or absence, or unusual personality. Some of the most striking books about fathers that I’ve come across include:

America’s Boy: A Memoir, by Wade Rouse

Fun home: A Family Tragicomic, by Alison Bechdel

Little House in the Big Woods, (series), by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Big Russ and Me: Father and Son: Lessons of Life by Tim Russert

The Ditchdigger’s Daughters:  by Yvonne Thornton

All Over but the Shoutin‘, by Rick Bragg

Dreams From My Father:, by Barack Obama

Horton Hatches the Egg or If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss

Fell free to suggest your favorites…       Because  the list could go on and on–    All you hard-working dads, grandpas, uncles, brothers— You know who you are and we salute you!
