In partnership with the YMCA, the library is pleased to offer Cooking Matters, a six-week nutritional education program that fights hunger by teaching families how to make healthy food choices on a budget. Participants will learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best possible nourishment to their families. The YMCA Veggie Van is West Michigan’s first and only mobile farmers market. The Veggie Van runs year round, making daily stops in urban neighborhoods throughout Grand Rapids, assuring that fruits and vegetables are available to people who otherwise have limited access to fresh produce. We sell locally grown, top-quality fruits and vegetables at reduced prices. Additionally, we accept SNAP, WIC, and Senior Project Fresh/Market FRESH benefits. Have a musical interlude in the library! As you browse the collection, enjoy a performance by Vox Vidorra. Vox Vidorra is a group of multi-instrumentalists fronted by the dynamic Molly Bouwsma-Schultz. Hailing from Grand Rapids, Vox Vidorra combines elements of Indie Rock and Soul. Their sound is rounded out by three part harmonies, and features every member of the band on a rotation of instruments. Vox Vidorra’s live show brings an intensity and energy that grips audiences’ eyes and ears.

The New Black: Ethnicity in the Arts

Debate rages about what is, or is not, Black art. Panelists will discuss what Black art is and how ethnicity has enhanced or hindered the current collection of artwork in the marketplace. They will examine the influence of ethnic art in West Michigan compared to national trends. Panelists include local artists Georgia Taylor, Monroe Bryant, Carol Johnson, Nina Muhammad and moderator George Bayard. Light refreshments will be served.
