The Life and Art of Manierre Dawson

Manierre Dawson, a native of Chicago, lived in Mason County as a fruit farmer for 55 years. Dawson was a pioneer of abstract art: the first artist in America to move away from representational painting that sought to copy nature and towards complete non-representational abstractions. Dawson’s works can be found in the collections of over 30 museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
