Does your child like to build and discover how things work? Kids in second through fifth grade can come to the Main Library for hands-on STEM experiences each month. Take part in science experiments and activities each session to find out how things work and explore the world. This month: Exploring Electricity. Use potatoes and lemons to test if they can be used to create electricity. Make static electricity for shocking experiments and tricks.

Growing Food at Home: Affordable and Easy Ways to Get Started

Join us at Urban Root’s Community Farm and Education Center to learn the basics of growing food in the city. Get tips on starting an easy and low cost garden and learn about shopping at farmers markets. Discover ways to find fresh, local and nutrient-dense food in your neighborhood. This program will be held rain or shine. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring a bottle of water. Parking is available across the street from the farm.

Come to the Grand Rapids History and Special Collections Department for a free after-hours program just for genealogists. Learn how to use the library databases, newspaper microfilm, and other other resources, and take advantage of free copying and printing during the event. 2017 Michigan Notable Book winner, William Rapai will discuss some of the invasive species that are impacting the Great Lakes. Learn how they arrives and the impact they are making on our environment. Rapai will also give in depth information on two of the invaders and describe how their relationship is totally reordering life in the Great Lakes. He will then share why, despite these profound changes, there is new optimism. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Clean Eating 101
