Summer Reading Challenge for Kids and Teens

The Grand Rapids Public Library challenges all kids in the city under the age of 18 to read. The more levels you complete, the more prizes you win. Victory is yours for the taking. Join the Science Alliance for this fast-paced insect safari that makes learning about entomology fun!  Investigate the life stories of monarch butterflies, dragonflies, bees, spiders and more. Learn the body parts of insects by labeling a gigantic eight-foot-long ant and praying mantis. Look through crazy goggles to see the world through a bug’s compound eye.  Experience preserved and live insects close up!  Scientist Bill Bosworth will help you have a blast learning about wings and stings and crawly things!

Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their preschool children, ages 3 to 5, to 45-minute classes featuring literacy-rich activities such as interactive storytelling using puppets, dramatic play, and hands-on fun. Related songs, fingerplays, and activities are interspersed between books. Classes end with a fun and creative art activity.

See a Tyrannosaur’s tooth, an Iguanodon’s thumb, a Velociraptor’s claw, a five-foot-seven-inch Apatosaurus femur, and even an entire Tyrannosaurus foot.
