World’s Best LEED Building
Tour the little brick building on Grand Rapids’ West Side that achieved the world’s highest LEED rating—LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Learn how the building’s owners transformed the 95-year-old building into a catalyst for sustainable and restorative development in Grand Rapids. The building features a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system, uses solar panels on the roof, used repurposed materials, has a rain garden and is 60% less expensive to operate than a traditional office space. Join Eric Doyle of Catalyst Partners on a behind the scenes tour of this green space.

Author Visit: Kristin Kimball talks about The Dirty Life
Kristin Kimball is a farmer and writer from northern New York. She and her husband Mark run Essex Farm, a 500-acre, draft-horse-powered farm that provides a full diet, year-round, for 250 members. Her memoir, The Dirty Life, chronicles the farm’s chaotic start-up year. The farm is now in its tenth season. Kristin will give a reading and talk about how the farm has changed since its inception. A question and answer period and book signing will follow the presentation.

Cheesemaking with Dancing Goat Creamery
Join us at Uptown Kitchen where Veronica Phelps from Dancing Goat Creamery will be demonstrating the process of cheesemaking. Phelps has been making cheese with Dancing Goat for the past several years. Her interest began after purchasing a “cow share” which allowed her to receive fresh, raw milk straight from the farm. Soon after, she found herself interning at Dancing Goat and is now the co-owner. In this presentation, she will show participants how to make “30-minute mozzarella.” Space is limited. Adventures in Antarctica—Exploring and Protecting Earth’s Last Great Wilderness
Educator Susan Tate had the adventure of a lifetime in March 2013 when she joined famed polar explorer and environmental leader Sir Robert Swan on his International Antarctic Expedition with the group 2041. As one of 80 participants from 28 nations, Susan explored the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, and experienced Robert’s Leadership on the Edge program. She will share pictures and stories from her trip, as well as information about Antarctica’s plight in our changing world.

GR Reads: The Movies – Hubble 3D
Hubble 3D takes movie-goers on a journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings, and lets them accompany space-walking astronauts as they attempt the most difficult and important tasks in NASA’s history. The film offers an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble Space Telescope’s legacy and highlights its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves. The first 50 attendees who show their GRPL library card will get in free.

Airstream: Custom Interiors
David Winick, a designer who builds custom Airstream trailers will speak about his experience with vintage Airstream trailers and his book Airstreams: Custom Interiors, which showcases his adventure re-creating custom-built Airstream trailers that date from 1948 to 2007, including his 75th Anniversary Bambu trailer.

MartiniMOTH: Close Encounters—Tales of Meeting the Unexpected
MartiniMOTH is a story telling event that is held the third Tuesday of the month at the SpeakEZ Lounge. Each month a new theme is chosen. Storytellers volunteer and must tell a story about the evening’s theme. The story must be true, be about themselves, and be kept under seven minutes. A panel of three judges vote for the top three storytellers. The winner is invited back the next month to be one of the judges and get their name engraved on the Winner’s Chalice. Come to listen, tell a story, and gather with friends.
