One Book, One City for Kids
One Book, One City for Kids is an annual reading program that encourages all 4th graders in the city to read and discuss the same book. The program also strives to encourage a lifelong love of reading among students, to inspire readers to bring story ideas and themes to life through discussion, and to build collaborative ties between public libraries, school libraries, and area schools. This year the entire city will be reading Special Delivery! by Sue Stauffacher. In this book, ten-year-old Keisha and her family’s animal rescue center face more challenges involving a baby crow in a mailbox and a skunk found in the nearby community garden.
Adult Computer Class: Facebook 201
This is a more advanced class designed for those who already have an introductory knowledge of Facebook and social networking. Students will go beyond the basics of Facebook and learn more advanced functions such as uploading videos and navigating Facebook’s privacy settings.
A Laugh in the Attic! The Playful Poetry of Shel Silverstein
During LaughFest, “Where the Sidewalk Ends” is at your very own Grand Rapids Public Library . . . but on the way make sure not to “Bump the Glump!” When thinking about the poetry of Shel Silverstein words such as absurd, amusing, ludicrous, ridiculous, hysterical and absolutely brilliant come to mind. Since his first book for children “Uncle Shelby’s Story of Lafcadio” was published in 1963, Uncle Shel’s books of poetry have become “must read” classics for children of all ages. Kids 12 and under are invited to come listen to his poetry and stories, and then create your own poetry or illustrate your favorite poems.
Exploring Michigan: Rivers, Islands, and Ghost Towns with Doc Fletcher, Deborah Gouin and Dianna Stampfler
Spend the afternoon at the library exploring the unique and hidden parts of Michigan. Canoeist Doc Fletcher will discuss Michigan’s waterways in his program “Paddle Now. Chores Later.” Sailing enthusiast and U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes Captain Deborah Gouin will discuss the Les Cheneaux Islands in Lake Huron. Promote Michigan President Dianna Stampfler will share a historic tour of the ghost towns in Michigan. A book signing will follow each program.
Pre-Reading Classes for Kids
Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their preschool children, ages 3 to 5, to 45-minute classes featuring literacy-rich activities such as interactive storytelling using puppets, dramatic play, and hands-on fun. Related songs, fingerplays, and activities are interspersed between books. Classes end with a fun and creative art activity.
