2014 Summer Reading Challenge

May 27 - August 31

The experiment this summer will be to see how many books you can read (if you can pull yourself away from your laboratory.) All kids under 18 in the city are challenged to join the Mad Scientist Club—read books, perform crazy experiments, and become a science wiz. The more minutes you read, the more levels you unlock. Come discover the ten interesting books that our smart staff have selected, or join your neighbors for fun, informative programs that are inspired by the books. Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, to 45-minute classes featuring literacy-rich activities such as interactive storytelling using puppets, dramatic play, and hands-on fun. Related songs, fingerplays, and activities are interspersed between books. Classes end with a fun and creative art activity.

Why I Write Fantasy: A Discussion with A. Lee Martinez

Lee Martinez, author of 16 books including Helen and Troy’s Epic Road Quest will lead an open discussion about why he is drawn to the genre of fantasy and why it has such a great growing appeal across the board. He will also examine the hazards and pitfalls of the growing appeal. Come with your questions and ideas. A book signing will follow.

The YMCA Veggie Van is West Michigan’s first and only mobile farmers market. The Veggie Van runs year round, making daily stops in urban neighborhoods throughout Grand Rapids, assuring that fruits and vegetables are available to people who otherwise have limited access to fresh produce. We sell locally grown, top-quality fruits and vegetables at reduced prices. Additionally, we accept SNAP, WIC, and Senior Project Fresh/Market FRESH benefits. Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their energetic toddlers, ages 18 months to 3 years, to 30-minute classes featuring hands-on, literacy-rich activities including stories, songs with fingerplays and other action, and sign language. Toddlers will develop pre-reading skills as they make connections between words and movement and have fun with related crafts and socialize during playtime.
