The World Through the Lens of Merze Tate

J. Edgar Hoover urged his agents to dig into every detail of the life of Merze Tate . . .and those closest to her. What was her story and why did she come to the attention of the State Department? Author Sonya Bernard-Hollins will walk through Tate’s life using never-before published F.B.I. documents. This photobiography told through the Tate’s own camera lens, bring to life the story of a trailblazer who, although recipient of prestigious national accolades as a political writer, historian, and professor, dies misunderstood. Despite her accomplishments as the first African American to earn a degree from Oxford University, an inventor, world traveler, and expert in disarmament, Tate’s life was filled with heartbreaking setbacks in the name of racism and sexism. Through it all, she fought opposition with education. A book signing will follow the presentation.
