DIY? GRPL.

Many months ago, I commissioned a handyman to make window boxes for my home and garage. I’m still waiting.

Every week, it seems, I help people find “how to” books on everything from the very specific (repairing the compressor in a 1995 Chevy Lumina’s 2.2 L engine) to the rather general (living room redecorating ideas). All this D-I-Y-ing going on can be attributed perhaps to the current state of the economy, but also to the wealth of great  information available at the Library – for free. People all over Grand Rapids are saving countless dollars by performing their own tricky car repairs or plumbing projects.

So why should I wait for someone else to build my flower boxes, when I can take this chance to learn something new for myself and save $$ in the process? Who knows where that could lead…innovative home decor projects? Hair cuts for the entire family? Bob Vila, watch out!

I agree! The library is a great starting point. I used library resources this summer to choose shade plants for a garden project. Last summer my husband and I checked out stacks of books on putting in stone patios and building pergolas.
