Building on the past two years of Day of the Dead programs at GRPL, the 2012 event qualified as a big success. From Thursday, November 1, through Sunday, November 4, over 1,000 visitors entered the auditorium to view over 20 altars. On Thursday, almost 150 middle school students from Rockford and Forest Hills Spanish Immersion programs visited, taking notes and pictures with smartphones. On Saturday, from 12:00 to 3:00, over 500 (we’re quite sure there were many more because we couldn’t keep up with the count) visitors enjoyed fabulous food from El Granjero Mexican Grill, pan de muerto from Panaderia Margo, coffee and lemonade; face painting (108 faces painted!), decorating sugar skulls (over 100) and skeleton paper crafts.
The Grand Rapids Public Library’s Ryerson Auditorium was transformed into a magical place over this weekend as visitors paused and reflected, spent respectful time viewing a wide variety of altars, celebrated with wonderful food and fun activities, and shed some tears for those who have left us.
