Genealogy/Family History is a primary research function of the Grand Rapids History & Special Collections Department (GRHSCD). Genealogical resources and information taken from those resources can be found in three separate areas:

Genealogy Reference Collection- Interfiled with the Grand Rapids History and Genealogy Reference Collection, this collection includes books, atlases, serials, and microfilm holdings that are directly accessible to the public. Michigan Census on microfilm is available from 1840 thru 1930, including Soundex and paper index. Standard national sources, published family genealogies, and local genealogical publications 2. The Archives- A number of Archival Collections include original source material, records, diaries, family history notes, etc. which may be helpful in genealogical research.
