African American History in Grand Rapids
When I saw the June 19, 2009 Grand Rapids Press article entitled Researcher Gives Voice to Former Slave’s Story I thought, “she might be a good speaker for a Library event.” The rest is, as they say, history. Join us on Tuesday, February 16, as we explore African American history in the state of Michigan and right here in the city of Grand Rapids. Mary Edmond’s personal mission has been to contribute to the awareness and understanding of African American history as an integral part of American history. Here the story of her research, what she has uncovered, and what she’s working on next.
Mary has used the resources available in the Grand Rapids History and Special Collections Department while doing her research. If you’ve never visited Level 4, show up early on Tuesday at 6:30 pm for a brief tour before the presentation. Find out what resources we have and how you could get started with your own history projects.
And, be sure not to miss our fifth annual Taste of Soul Sunday on February 21! We’ve got more history presentations, including the History of Black Boxers in Michigan and Lessons from the Jim Crow Museum.
