Youth Media Awards

This past Monday at the American Library Association‘s Mid-Winter Conference, youth awards for literature were handed out. It is always an exciting time for me even though I don’t attend the event. I just love to hear what books were selected!  Some years I have my personal favorites and other years I don’t. This year, I kept an eye on what other libraries were selecting in their mock awards and tried to read some of the books from their selections.

At any rate, this years Caldecott, given for illustrations, was awarded to Jerry Pinkney’s picture book The Lion and the Mouse. After earning many Caldecott honors, Pinkney finally received the ultimate prize! He is known for his watercolors and pencil and colored pencil drawings. His adaptation includes only animal sounds, no words, so is truly told through the pictures alone.

Middle grade novel When you Reach Me by Rebecca Stead took the Newberry. This one I read based on all the buzz I was hearing as well as great reviews from some of my goodreads friends.  It tells the story of Miranda.  She feels lonely after her best friend suddenly stops talking to her.  Soon, however, she makes new friends and learns the intricacies of different friendships and truths about others she would have never considered a friend.  At the same time, she also starts receiving mysterious letters that appear to be telling the future.  It was quite an enjoyable read with a fun twist ending, and if you have read many other Newbery books, you hear that certain “Newbery” voice.

Libba Bray’s first series, The Gemma Doyle series, mixed romance with adventure, fantasy, and Victorian times. Her newest, so I have heard, breaks this mold completely. Although I have yet to read it, Going Bovine was awarded the Michael L. Printz Award, which honors teen literature. This title came as a surprise. I have heard many comments about the book, mostly mixed, but many librarians feel it came out of nowhere to win such a prestigious award. It  now holds the next place in line on my “to read” pile!
