Comic club in GR

I recently discovered that Grand Rapids has a comic club.  The first visit for me was warm and welcoming as we sat down and traded some short comics we had made, or had bought.  There were about 7-8 of us huddled around a couple tables that where pushed together.  The first order of business became talking about our opinions on a project to create a comics anthology.  After that we had a comic jam or sorts, where one person draws a panel and every one takes a turn creating the following panel.   It’s a little like exquisite corpse because the story can change as many times as there are panels.

Nervous about attending a comic club?  Not to worry- almost everyone was a beginner at making comics, or just even getting together and talking about them.  Everyone I’ve met has been very receptive to ideas and appreciative of artistic skill.  If you’d like to get to know a little more about comics, Scott Mccloud’s Understanding Comics is an excellent overview.

And if you’ve made it this far and you’d like to attend the next  session (this thursday!)  visit www.grcomics.org.
