Are You Ready, Player One?

Have you been reading GR Reads pick Ready Player One and wishing you could get in on the action? Now you can! Last week author Ernest Cline announced a contest to win a 1981 DeLorean. All you have to do is find the “Easter egg” hidden somewhere in the text of the hardcover or paperback editions, then be the first to complete a series of challenges and the car is yours! The only hints are the Easter egg is a website, and it leads to an Atari 2600 game designed for the challenge. Beating the game leads to the second challenge, which leads to the third and final challenge. The first player to finish the third challenge wins.

True to the spirit of Ready Player One, Cline is maintaining a Leaderboard as players complete each step. The second and third challenges open in July and August, respectively, so you have plenty of time to compete for the prize. You can find the rules and information about the contest here. I think it would be pretty great if GRPL made a strong showing in the contest, and even better if the DeLorean found its home in Grand Rapids.

Even if your name never appears at the top of the leaderboard, the contest is sure to be a lot of fun and great preparation for the GRPL ’80s Game Quest: Scavenger Hunt and Pub Crawl (must be 21 to participate) on June 21. Some of the other events we have planned for the next few months could provide key information for making it to the end of the contest. You can learn more about the scavenger hunt and other GR Reads events related to Ready Player One here. Now I’m off to scour the pages of Ready Player One for the Easter egg!
