The Big Read

The Big Read gives Grand Rapids the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of the great novels from American and world literature, The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Set in the 1920s, The Maltese Falcon follows Detective Sam Spade as he becomes embroiled with a mysterious client, avenges the death of his partner, and chases a priceless treasure.

Throughout the month of May, the Grand Rapids Public Library will host a series of events exploring The Maltese Falcon - everything from book discussions to learning CSI techniques at the Police Department to examining research of Grand Rapids' oldest cold case murder. The month culminates with a visit from Richard Layman, an expert on Hammett and his work.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.

Additional support for The Big Read is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Transportation for The Big Read is provided by Ford.
