As Grand Rapids youth enter school, congratulations to the 5,162 kids and teens that participated in the Summer Reading Program this year! T-shirts; a bike; trips; 32 day passes to the Kroc Center; gift cards to book stores, i-tunes, Gamestop and more were given to encourage youth to finish their reading goals. Although some prizes and coupons are donated, the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation funds prizes and performers to make the Summer Reading Program possible. We had an activity record, just for babies and almost 500 participated. The Dominican Study says “students who participated in the public library summer reading program scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those students who did not participate and they gained in other ways as well.” Have a great year and we look forward to seeing you for an even better Summer Reading Program in 2013!
